Questi davvero me li stampo e li rilego.
Ne faccio magari anche un po’ di copie, da regalare agli amici.
Si tratta di quattro pezzi- due lunghi e due brevissimi – scritti da M. John Harrison riguardo ai mondi del fantastico – come si costruiscono, come non si costruiscono, cosa sono, cosa non sono – e pubblicati in rete.

Any child can see that the map is not the ground. You cannot make a “reliable” map. A map, like a scientific theory, or consciousness itself, is no more than a dream of control. The conscious mind operates at forty or fifty bits a second, and disorder is infinitely deep. Better admit that. Better lie back and enjoy it—especially since, without the processes implied by it, no one could write (or read) books anyway. Writing is a con.

When you engage with a novel, it is an engagement with words. What you engage is not a world but the motives of the author, mediated by some more or less effective technical tricks (actually, even that is a faint hope you both have, a shared lie, an over-dignified description of an ungainly struggle with the text’s promises).

Ma la visione di M. John Harrison è, come in tutti i suoi scritti, sufficientemente sovversiva ed originale da cortocircuitare qualsiasi “regola” appresa da manuali, corsi o dibattiti.

Scopriamo intanto con piacere che Nova Swing, l’ultima fatica dello scrittore inglese, è fra i cinque finalisti al premio Philip K. Dick (dopo l’Arthur C. Clarke e il British Fantasy Award).
